Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
